New to spoken word? What to expect from an open mic event: the organiser will ask whether you want to perform. If not, that's fine. You can read or work from memory. The work doesn't have to be your own, Do use the mic if there is one. There's usually a maximum time allocated (often 5 minutes)- you will annoy people if you go on too long. If there are featured guests they will usually start or end with a longer set. Most events last 2 hours or so. Each event develops its own style - some are funny and rude, some political and angry, some cerebral and literary, but variety is always welcome.
